WHET, as a leading expert in renewable energy solutions, is excited to share the latest development in the Irish renewable energy sector. Neoen, a global independent producer of exclusively renewable energy, has recently announced the commencement of construction on the 79 MWp Ballinknockane solar farm in County Limerick, Ireland. This project marks a significant milestone in the country's energy transition journey.
The Ballinknockane solar farm, which was awarded in the Republic of Ireland's RESS 2 auction in 2022, is set to become the first utility-scale solar farm in County Limerick. Neoen has partnered with Omexom as the EPC contractor for the solar plant and TLI Group for the construction of the 110kV onsite substation. This collaboration ensures that the project will meet the highest standards of engineering, procurement, and construction.
With an initially planned capacity of 61 MWp, the solar farm has been upgraded to 79 MWp, demonstrating Neoen's commitment to maximizing renewable energy output. Upon completion, the solar farm is expected to generate enough energy to power 16,000 homes, significantly reducing carbon emissions by approximately 21,000 tonnes per year. This will play a crucial role in achieving Ireland's 2030 climate targets and contributing to global efforts to combat climate change.
To further enhance the project's sustainability, Neoen has incorporated agrisolar practices, allowing sheep to graze on the site. Additionally, several biodiversity-promoting measures will be implemented, including the planting of trees and hedges, the installation of bird boxes and bug hotels, and the creation of biodiversity meadows. These initiatives will not only support local wildlife but also contribute to the overall ecological health of the region.
As part of Neoen's commitment to sharing benefits with the local community, a Community Benefit Fund totaling over €1.8 million over the asset's lifetime will be established. This fund will support local community initiatives, fostering a sense of ownership and pride in the project.
The construction of the Ballinknockane solar farm is just one of Neoen's many contributions to Ireland's renewable energy landscape. With a total capacity of 190 MW in operation or under construction, Neoen's Irish portfolio now includes three solar farms totaling 58 MWp and eight wind farms totaling 53 MW. This diverse range of renewable energy projects demonstrates Neoen's commitment to diversifying the energy mix and accelerating the energy transition in Ireland.
In addition to the Ballinknockane solar farm, Neoen was also a major winner in the Republic of Ireland's RESS 4 auction, securing two new solar projects totaling 170 MWp. This success further cements Neoen's position as a leading player in the Irish renewable energy market.
